Bertha Moose is a Champagne and Aishihik First Nation citizen. Bertha was born in Haines Junction, Yukon, where she was taught to sew by her grandmother and her mother. As a result she is passionate about seeing young people sewing and loves to teach the younger generations her skills, she works hard to keep the traditional practices she grew up with alive. Bertha currently lives and creates in Whitehorse.
The word moccasin originates from the Algonquin language. This word was used by settlers and has come to refer to any kind of indigenous slipper. Each First Nation have their own style of slipper that have been in constant creation for generations, generally handed down through one generation teaching the next.
