Hand Knit in Kugluktuk, Nunavut
Qiviut (Muskox Hair) and Arctic Fox
Polar bear design
9 in diam approx.
Qiviuq is eight times warmer than sheep wool, its also softer and lighter than Cashmere
In Inuit religion, Nanuq was the master of bears, and hunters would need to appease Nanuq in order to have a sucessful hunt. The word has come to refer to Polar Bears in these areas.
Nunavut Qiviut is based in one of the coldest and darkest regions of Canada, Kugluktuk, Nunavut. They share this tundra landscape with one of Canada's largest population of Muskox. From this cold comes the softest and warmest wool on earth. Nunavut Qiviut is just a small group of makers, but they are dedicated to creating product that is sustainable, imaginative and beneficial to the fragile arctic environment.
